Nestled in the hills near Odessa is a little lake that holds some big fish, and thanks to a recent survey conducted by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, anglers have a better idea what kind of fishing Cayuta Lake offers and how it can be enhanced. DEC Region 8 fisheries biologist Brad Hammers recently met with sportsmen and other interested parties to reveal the findings of a Cayuta Lake creel survey conducted in and Cayuta Lake covers acres and has a maximum depth of 26 feet.
Largemouth bass, chain pickerel, walleyes, yellow perch and bluegills are the primary game fish, but the survey focused primarily on the health of the walleye fishery. The survey indicated catch rates were good for largemouth bass, perch and crappie. However, the catch rate for walleye for boat anglers was 0. Survey represent more than 10, hours of fishing time for the period May to March Based on the findings, DEC intends to stock walleyes every other year at a rate of 20 fingerlings per acre.
This level of stocking is expected to increase catch rates for walleyes. DEC also plans to continue the special regulations for walleye, inch minimum size limit and a three-fish daily creel limit, which are geared toward producing a trophy walleye fishery. While many hunting seasons are already open, a big day for small game hunters comes Saturday when pheasant hunting season opens in the Southern Tier. DEC will release 30, adult pheasants across the state prior to opening day and during the season at various locations that are open to public hunting.
Many county sportsman federations, including Chemung, supplement the state stocking program with their own ringneck releases. As you read this, we are in the middle of the Columbus Day weekend special youth deer hunt. One of my goals has always been to highlight the accomplishments of young hunters and anglers. With that in mind, I invite any successful youth hunters to submit their stories and photos for inclusion in future columns.
I extend the same invitation to successful adult hunters as well. If you are looking for places to hunt this fall, several state parks are open for various types of hunting. Pinnacle and Two Rivers are also open for hunting during gun season, with weapons limited to muzzleloading rifles only. Small game hunting is also allowed at Mark Twain State Park and Pinnacle, except during any deer season.
