Major traffic works on the A27 which have caused two years of delays for motorists are finally approaching completion. The Highways Agency has begun making final preparations to return the stretch of the road between Beddingham and Southerham, near Lewes, to normal operation. The section has created continual problems for drivers since September when work begun to build a flyover across the railway line at Beddingham, replacing a level crossing which had caused jams for decades. An exact completion date has not yet been confirmed by the Highways Agency but it has published official notices publicising that the speed limit on the stretch will soon return to the national speed limit from its current 30mph and 40mph restrictions.
It has also announced that vehicles will not be allowed to do U-turns at any stage on the road and right turns into and out of most of the junctions between Beddingham and Southerham will be banned. Drivers needing to make the turns will be expected to continue to the next roundabout and come back on themselves. Lewes MP Norman Baker, who saw his former home at Railway Cottages, Beddingham, demolished to make way for the project, said: "It will be good to have the road open once again. It has been a complicated task but I think it has been handled well.
Delays have been kept to a minimum. Have you had to deal with delays on the A27? How do you feel about the completion of the project?
